Tools, Books, and Resources That Might Actually Help

There is no shortage of financial advice on the internet.

Books. Apps. Calculators. Templates. Courses. Tools.

Everyone seems to have a system that promises to fix your money problems if you just buy the right thing or follow the right plan.

It gets overwhelming fast.

This page is different.

I don’t share everything I come across.

I share the resources that seem genuinely useful and things that make managing money a little easier for real people living real lives.

No endless lists.

No fluff.

No recommendations just because someone is paying me to mention them.

Just resources that might help you take your next step.

Books Worth Reading

Some of the best financial lessons come from people who have spent years studying money, habits, debt, and wealth-building.

Calculators & Tools

Sometimes seeing the numbers makes everything feel less overwhelming.

See where your money is going and identify opportunities to improve your monthly cash flow.

Best For: Building awareness, improving money habits, and staying consistent with your financial plan.

Apps Worth Trying

Technology should make money management easier, not harder.

Budgeting Apps

Track spending and stay aware of where your money is going.

Best For: Day-to-day money management.

YNAB (You Need A Budget) — One of the most powerful budgeting apps available. YNAB uses a zero-based budgeting system that helps you give every dollar a job and plan ahead before spending happens. It has a learning curve, but many people find it completely changes how they manage money. (Paid — free trial available)

EveryDollar — A simpler zero-based budgeting app that focuses on helping you create and follow a monthly budget. Easy to use, beginner friendly, and includes debt payoff tracking features. (Free version available)

PocketGuard — Shows you exactly how much you have left to spend after bills and savings goals are accounted for. Great for people who want a quick snapshot of their finances without managing a detailed budget. (Free)

Goodbudget — Envelope-style budgeting app. Great for people who want to plan ahead rather than simply track spending after it happens. (Free)

Empower — Links all your accounts in one place so you can see spending, savings, investments, and net worth from a single dashboard. (Free)

My Experience

I’ve personally used both YNAB and EveryDollar.

YNAB is more powerful and detailed if you want complete control over your money and don’t mind spending a little time learning the system.

EveryDollar is easier to get started with and works well if you want something simple and straightforward.

Neither one is “better” for everyone.

The best budgeting app is the one you’ll actually open and use consistently.

Savings Apps

Automate savings and build financial habits.

Best For: Growing emergency funds and savings goals.

Rocket Money — Helps identify subscriptions, track spending, and monitor savings opportunities.

Acorns — Rounds up your purchases and automatically invests the spare change. Good for people who want to start small. (Paid — plans start at $3/month)

Qapital — Creates custom savings rules tied to everyday habits — like saving $1 every time you buy coffee. (Free trial, then paid)

Chime — Mobile banking app with built-in automatic savings tools and no monthly fees. (Free)

Debt Payoff Apps

Tools designed to help organize and track debt reduction plans.

Best For: Staying focused on debt freedom.

Undebt.it — Browser-based debt payoff planner supporting Snowball, Avalanche, and custom strategies. No account required to get started. (Free)

Debt Payoff Planner — Simple mobile app where you enter your debts, pick a strategy, and see your projected payoff date. (Free with ads or paid upgrade)

→ Available on iOS and Android

EveryDollar — Zero-based budgeting app with a built-in debt payoff tracker following the snowball method. (Free version available)

A Note on Apps

Every app listed here has a free version or free trial. Some have paid upgrades, which are noted above.

The best app isn’t necessarily the most popular one.

It’s the one you’ll actually open and use consistently.

Start with one. Give it a real try. Then decide whether you need something more advanced.
